A couple’s retreat in Montenegro

Here is a pick of things for couples looking for a break from the sun lounger...

If you’re in Kotor Bay...

You could stay at...Bella di Mare apartments in Dobrota, Kotor Bay. These boutique waterfront apartments are ideal for couples with a spacious balcony overlooking the bay in a beautiful village setting. The apartments are a fifteen minute walk from the centre of Dobrota and guests can make use of the Bella di Mare’s pontoon with free sun loungers and parasols.

You could visit... the Bay of Kotor and explore the picturesque villages, churches, monasteries and secluded little bars. An afternoon could be spent doing a tour of the bay area for spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea followed by a bite to eat at a waterside eaterie to watch the sun go down.

And while you’re in Kotor visit Drago Palace, a unique scenic island, accessible by ferry from Perast. The palace was built in two eras; the northern part is of gothic style and was built in the 14^th and 15^th century and the southern baroque style building was built towards the end of the 17^th century.

If you’re in Budva...

You could stay at...Villa Vita Just for Two, a one bedroom apartment in a beautiful stone house with a shared gym, tennis court and swimming pool. The apartment offers stunning views of Budva Riviera and is extremely spacious, all on one level with a private terrace, balcony and an open plan kitchen.

 You could visit... Tara Canyon the longest canyon in Montenegro and at 1,300 metres deep, it is the 2^nd deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon.  The water is extremely clean and is known as the ‘tears of Europe’ and the area is rich with endemic plants originating from the Ice Age. Couples could try a hand at rafting and even those who are a little apprehensive will be reassured as the rafting is more of a tame paddle.

And while you’re in Budva...visit the Tara Bridge, 365 metres long, for spectacular views over the Tara Canyon. Dare devils can bungee jump from the longest arch directly above the Tara River and it is the 7^th highest bungee jump in the world. Bungee jumps are organised by the UK Bungee Club.

If you’re in.... Herceg Novi

You could stay at...Villa Victoria which is a two bedroom apartment in Savina, a ten minute walk from the old town of Herceg Novi where guests can explore the impressive fortresses of Spanjola and Fort Mare. Villa Victoria is a stylish 100 year old house away from the hustle and bustle and guests can unwind in the large garden which is decked out with exotic plans, patio furniture, a BBQ and a path that leads directly on to the promenade.

You could visit... Blue Grotto, a big and beautiful network of caves located on a rarefied coastline of the Peninsula Lustica in the Bay of Kotor. Blue Grotto is approximately 30 minutes from Herceg Novi and you can take a private boat or join an organised tour of the crystal blue waters. The sea depth inside the caves is 3 – 4 metres and the water is very warm and salty some people choose to get in the water, others can stay on the boat if they prefer!

 And while you’re in Herceg Novi...try Kayak Montenegro where no experience is necessary and enjoy beautiful views of Montenegro from Boka Bay or Skadar Lake. One particularly good kayak trip is from Herceg to Rose and takes approximately 45 minutes where you can stop for a meal at the harbour and kayak back to Herceg in the sunset. And while you're in Montenegro...
Try kite surfing in Ulcinj on Velika Plaza beach, a hot spot for Kite surfing. The best area is Ada Bojana at the end of Velika Plaza that offers the best windsurfing conditions, especially from September to October where speeds can reach 50 km/h or more. Kite surfing costs approximately 20 Euros per hour and equipment can rented from local kite schools. For those after tuition, kite surfing training is also available.
